An AI brand mention is when an AI answer names your practice in its text, whether or not it links to your website. For a health practice, a mention is often what a patient acts on, because they read your name in a short list and then search for you directly. It differs from an AI citation, which is a source link.

What Is an AI Brand Mention?
Also called: AI mention
Key takeaways
- ✓An AI brand mention is when an AI answer names your practice in its text, whether or not it links to your website.
- ✓A mention differs from an AI citation, which is a source link, and the two can happen separately.
- ✓In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, YouTube mentions correlated at about 0.737 with AI visibility, and branded web mentions at 0.66 to 0.71.
- ✓In Health Biz Scale's test of GPT-4o-mini answering from memory with no web search, only 6 of 764 established US practices (0.8%) were named, so being named is not a given.
How an AI brand mention works
Open any AI tool and ask for the best practices of your kind in your city. The answer is usually a short list of names with a line about each. Those names are brand mentions. Some may carry a link and some may not.
Why does that matter if there is no click? A patient can take the names from the answer and do the next step themselves. They search for the clinic by name, open its map listing or call. A mention that produces no click on a link can still produce a new patient, which is why a link count alone misses it.
There are three outcomes for a practice in any single answer.
- Named and cited. Your name appears and a link points to your page. The strongest result, since the patient has a name and a route to you.
- Named only. Your name appears with no link, or with a link to a directory. Patients can still find you by searching.
- Not named. The answer lists other practices. As far as that patient is concerned, you did not exist.
How does a tool choose which names to include? The vendors do not publish their rules, so nobody outside can state the exact recipe. Research gives clues. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands looked at what goes along with AI visibility across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. The strongest correlations were YouTube mentions, about 0.737 on a Spearman scale, and branded web mentions, 0.66 to 0.71. A Spearman correlation runs from negative one to one and measures how closely two rankings move together. Backlinks, meaning links from other sites to yours, showed only a weak correlation. The pattern was consistent across the three tools. Ahrefs itself says correlation is not causation. SE Ranking's ChatGPT data, covered under AI citation, found referring domains predicted citations most strongly. The two studies measure different things, links to a page versus brand visibility, so I read them as complementary.
Read that carefully. It suggests that being talked about by name across the web goes along with being named by AI. For a practice, that means places where your name appears next to your specialty, such as podcasts, local press, association pages and videos. It is a correlation, so posting a video is a bet.
It helps to keep three things apart. A mention is your name, in any form. A citation is a source the tool shows. A link is something a patient can click, and it is the same thing as a backlink only when it points at your own site. One answer can contain any mix of the three. Placement matters too. In my judgment, a name in a short list or a card is easier for a patient to notice than a name buried mid-paragraph, so log where you appear and not only whether you appear.
Mentions can also be wrong. A tool may repeat an outdated claim or blend your details with another clinic's, which is the problem described under hallucination. A mention only helps if what is said is accurate.
Mentions are the raw input to two measures. How often you appear is AI visibility.
Your slice of all names across many answers is AI share of voice.
Example: AI brand mention at a health practice
Take a functional medicine clinic with four providers in a mid-size metro. A patient asks an AI tool about gut health testing near them. This example is illustrative, not a transcript, but the answer might look like this.
Several functional medicine practices in the area offer comprehensive stool testing, including Clinic A, Clinic B and Clinic C.
The patient writes down the three names and searches each. Clinic B is the practice in our scenario. It has a local podcast appearance, a video series where the physician is named in every title, and the same one-line description on its Google profile, its association page and its website. Clinics A and C have a website and little else. When the patient searches each name, only Clinic B turns up a podcast, a video series and a map listing that all describe it the same way. That pattern fits what the Ahrefs study found, but it does not prove the cause, so the clinic would still need to test.
Now the real data on how rare being named is. Health Biz Scale checked 764 established US health practices across 228 cities between May 11 and Aug 20, 2026, with one check per practice and test runs excluded. We asked GPT-4o-mini, through OpenAI's API and answering from memory with no web search, 2,292 patient-style questions. Only 6 of the 764 practices (0.8%) were named. About 7 in 10 questions named a city, so the model was answering the local question and still did not name most practices. The ChatGPT app searches live and can answer differently, so this is a floor and not a forecast.
An MGMA-published study adds a related clue. In 33,340 ChatGPT citation events, practice-owned websites made up about 23% of the cited surface. The author runs a commercial service, so treat it as one data point.
How to check yours in 60 seconds
- Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode for the best [specialty] practices in [city].
- Note whether your exact practice name appears in the text, and whether a link comes with it.
- Note which competitors appear.
- Repeat with two other phrasings, such as "who treats [condition] near me."
Use a ChatGPT temporary chat so your own history does not shape the answer. Write down the exact spelling of your name in each answer, since a variant such as a shortened name can be a different mention than the one patients would search.
If you are not named in any of the three, that is useful information. It tells you where to start.
What to do about it
- Choose one short description of your practice and use it word for word on your site, Google profile and directories.
- Appear on local podcasts, in local press and on association pages, with your specialty named next to your practice.
- Post useful videos where the clinician is named on screen and in the title and description.
- Ask happy patients to name the treatment in their reviews, in their own words.
- Track mentions monthly in a simple sheet, with the question, the tool and the names that appeared. See AI citation to separate links from names.
- Correct any wrong claim at its source page before you chase more mentions.
- Keep the name itself consistent. Use the same practice name, spelled the same way, on your site, profiles, videos and press so a tool can connect them to one practice.
- Ask each provider to include the practice name in their bio on any outside site where they appear, such as a speaker page or a podcast guest page.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI brand mention?
An AI brand mention is when an AI answer names your practice in its text, whether or not it links to your website. A patient asking for the best hormone clinic in their city might read a short list of names. If yours is on it, that is a mention. It differs from a citation, which is a link to a source page.
What is the difference between a mention and an AI citation?
A mention is your name in the answer text. A citation is a link to a page the AI used as a source. A practice can be named because a directory lists it while its own site is not linked, or its page can be cited without the practice being named. Both matter, and they are measured separately.
What gets a practice mentioned by AI tools?
An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found the strongest correlations with AI visibility were YouTube mentions, about 0.737, and branded web mentions, 0.66 to 0.71. Backlinks were only weakly correlated. Ahrefs says correlation is not causation, so read it as a hint that being discussed by name across the web goes along with being named by AI.
Can I pay to be mentioned by ChatGPT?
I know of no way to buy a place in the text of an AI answer. What you can do is earn the kind of real, relevant mentions that go along with being named, such as podcasts, local press, association pages and videos where your name appears with your specialty. Buying mentions on low-quality sites adds noise and can spread wrong claims about your practice.
The bottom line
An AI brand mention is an AI answer naming your practice in its text, with or without a link. For a health practice, it is often what a patient acts on, because they read your name in a short list and then search for you. The one thing to do is run the same patient question in three tools this week, record whether your exact name appears, and note which competitors do.
